Gaia Homeostasis

What's the most hotly debated issue of our day? Is it 2012, global warming, or healthcare? Well, two out of three really do go together so let's focus on those two. Besides, this web site isn't about politics anyway. But wait, isn't global warming highly political these days? Ah, but I digress!

Scientists everywhere agree that the average temperature has been steadily rising. In fact its now up just over ONE degree! One degree you say? So, what's the big deal here Al Gore? As with our own human bodies we must maintain a pretty tight range on body temperature. A tic up or down, even though miniscule, can be dangerous.

So it is with the earth. One degree is BIG!

The original models have been increasingly moving to the upside. Polar caps are melting far faster than thought. So, what's up? The earth should be taking care of itself a little better regardless of what we're doing or what's impacting her from out there. Thus enter the GAIA paradigm.

The Gaia hypothesis is an ecological construct proposing that the biosphere and the physical components of the Earth (atmosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere) are closely integrated to form a complex interacting system that maintains the climatic and biogeochemical conditions on Earth in a preferred homeostasis. This planet lives and breathes like our body.

So, what's going on with all the myriad of indicators?

Temperatures are rising, sea ice is melting, sea levels are rising as a consequence, the climate is becoming less predictable, weather is generally more extreme, and rain (or n rain) patterns are changing greatly. Areas of desert are getting rain and areas that once got rain are becoming bone dry.

We KNOW things are changing, what we don't know is WHY!

And then we have to ask ourselves, does this have anything to do with the thousands of years of 2012 prophecies and warnings. Though there's no specific causation(s) that we can link to the effects, it sure is beginning to feel like maybe the indigenous societies saw calamity, they just didn't see what it was that was causing it. Is Gaia broke or are we breaking her?

Or, is there something that's possibly GOOD coming around the corner?
