What is the story with Global Warming?

Author: DR Chand Zahid

Many of us hear it all the time that the earth is heating up because of a hole in the ozone layer. That is causing the climate change and bringing out many natural disasters such as earth quakes, tsunami and floods. What is this global warming and how does it all happen? Is it because we are polluting our earth and not taking care of it properly?

Yes, exactly right! We all are guilty of not taking this issue seriously. We are polluting our environment by releasing harmful and toxic gases such as Carbon Monoxide, Sulphur Dioxide and releasing much Chlorine containing compounds such CFC gases. The toxic gases such as Carbon Monoxide and Sulphur Dioxide which are released by burning fuels such as patrol, are let out in the atmosphere, and are brought back onto earth through rain. This rain is very acidic and destroys the plants and many other organisms in water. As plants help us to balance gases such as Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide, with plants being destroyed by acid rain, this balance is destabilised. This is called a green house effect. Therefore by driving cars, making more factories, producing nuclear weapons, we are causing the release of green house gases into the atmosphere and bringing about the green house effect.

CFC gases are produced by many varieties of hairspray heavily used in the 80’s. It is also used in refrigerators and chlorine based gases are released. These CFC gases gather in the atmosphere and produces free radicals which convert O3 into O2. Free Radical is highly charged species that are produced by the Chlorine present in CFC gases. These free radicals break down the ozone layer (O3) and allow harmful radiation (UV radiation) to penetrate through to the earth. It is not known but perhaps this radiation is causing the water in the sea to warm up. According to scientists at the University of California, the way the ocean deals with cold water is controlled by the alignment of the sun, moon and earth. And at the moment we're experiencing less and less cold water being forced to the surface, so the planet is heading for its warmest peak. With Icebergs melting, more water flows into the sea and the sea level rises up. With more water in sea, it evaporates more into the atmosphere and therefore more rain. More rain means more floods and increase in natural disasters.

With an increase in acid rain, the green life is being destroyed on earth. This all leads to a huge impact on our climate and brings about many disasters that we so ignorantly call the natural disasters. But are they natural or is it because we have not taken care of our earth. We are not being responsible for our actions. Are we in fact responsible for all these disasters and can we call them natural disasters if we are responsible for them?

Some of us like to believe that Global Warming is nothing but some scientist making racket over things that are imminent. The choice is ours, whether we ignore scientists warning and live as we wish because it will all be destroyed anyway. Or take responsibility for our actions and leave the earth in a good state so it goes on for bit longer for next generations to enjoy.
